Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development

The mission of the Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development (PPND) is "to support the development of diverse, tolerant, mixed-income communities in Pittsburgh"

The overriding goal of the work of PPND is to use our resources to transform inner urban neighborhoods into vibrant, cutting-edge mixed-income communities with economic opportunity for all residents.

The mission of the Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development (PPND) is to develop tolerant, mixed-income communities of choice in the city of Pittsburgh – in short, to create “healthy” communities. Healthy communities are created by exploiting opportunities and instigating change: by identifying and attracting new markets and new resident populations; by creating new jobs that has traction in today’s economy; by making communities desirable places to live. Dilapidated, dangerous places once abandoned by the market are reinvigorated. New and diverse populations, lured by the sociability and eclecticism of these communities, transform places that had languished for years. In short, healthy communities are viable choices for families, employees and businesses.

As these neighborhoods become competitive, we want to ensure that low-income communities are not simply treated as commodities. The rewards of growth must be equitably distributed. As neighborhoods improve, poor families cannot simply be pushed into another fragile environment; “mixed-income” cannot simply be a stop on the way to “middle class” but must be a permanent state of healthy diversity. All residents, including low-income residents, must play an active role in determining the future of their communities: without this element of self-determination, neighborhood change is neither equitable nor sustainable. While this is often a tricky balance to strike, it is only by simultaneously targeting the private market and providing a safety net for the most disadvantaged neighborhood residents that we can create truly healthy communities.

This objective is accomplished through consulting and training programs that combine the information and expertise found in a university with the skills of a professional staff.

At the University of Pittsburgh SBDC, we understand the tremendous impact that small businesses have upon the U.S. economy. Studies indicate that these businesses account for 50—or $3.3 trillion—of the Gross Domestic Product and make up 92% of all U.S. businesses. The survival of these businesses is fundamental in ensuring the long-term health of our economy.

Established in 1979, the University of Pittsburgh SBDC has an impressive record of service to our clients. Under the leadership of Executive Director Ann M. Dugan we have dramatically expanded our range of consulting services, training programs and access to funding sources for growing companies.

Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh

The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh (URA) is more than a redevelopment authority -- it is the City of Pittsburgh's economic development agency. As a developer of last resort, the URA develops properties which the private sector will not undertake. Our goals are to create jobs, increase the city's tax base, and improve the vitality of businesses, neighborhoods, and the City's culture as a whole.

Incorporated in 1946, the URA was one of the first redevelopment authorities in Pennsylvania. The URA undertook the first privately financed downtown redevelopment project in the United States -- Gateway Center. Since then, the URA has constructed and rehabilitated tens of thousands of homes, reclaimed thousands of acres of environmentally contaminated brownfield and riverfront sites, and assisted hundreds of businesses in neighborhoods throughout the City of Pittsburgh.

Services Include: Property Development, Nonprofit Funding, Project Management, Housing, Business Consulting Services, Access to City Services / Programs, Main Street Programs, Facade Restoration
