The Modern Cafe has been on the corner of Western
and Galveston since Prohibition was lifted. It has always been a meeting place for the neighborhood. George Bouzos bought the business from John Castello and Nick Varberakis in early 1974. After almost twenty years it was time to retire, so George sold the business in 1993 to his daughter, Irene Zotis, and headed for Florida to live the good life. Irene has given The Modern Cafe some facelifts while keeping the original feel of this old time bar.

In the fall of 1998, Paramount Pictures noticed the large overhanging neon sign on the corner when they were looking for locations for their upcoming Michael Douglas movie, The Wonder Boys. After checking out the inside they found it to be the perfect location, so in March of 1999, The Modern Cafe was closed for the three weeks to prepare for the movie, which filmed for three days. After all was said and done, it was featured in the movie for about three minutes.

There are daily beer specials as well as food specials, but what makes this place special is that it is such a neighborhood place to hang out, meet friends and catch up on the day's events.
